How to make a 2012 personalised calendar from your own photographs. Free templates provided here.

Looking for a personalized gift this Christmas that will be enjoyed all year?
A couple of years ago I created a set of calendar templates and a video tutorial on how to use them.
The free 2012 templates have a decorative framed image area into which you can import your own images to produce the nice edge effect below.
My tutorial has proved very popular with nearly ten thousand people following my guide so far.

Here is an example of what you will be able to create using my free 2012 Calendar templates. Go on make someones day this Xmas by giving them one of the best and very unique presents that they can enjoy all year.

My 2012 Calendar Templates. Here is January, what will you create?

It will soon be Christmas and you may find this of use, I created an easy to follow tutorial on how to make a printed calendar using photographs YOU have taken.
The monthly calendar templates are provided free so you can make a unique gift for someone right now.
All you need is Corel PaintShop Photo Pro (or any photo editing software that supports layers such as Gimp, Photoshop etc), A colour printer, some Matt finish paper and 12 images of your choice.

If you are interested in giving it a go then have a look at my 2012 Calendar Guide page here :
Complete guide on how to make a 2012 personalised calendar from your own photographs. <- Click me now to start making a great gift for Christmas.

I hope this has inspired you to have a go at producing a truly unique personalised Xmas present that you will be remembered for, for the whole year ahead. Use Matt Paper as I suggest and it will not cost a lot of money to make several of these calendars.

Matt Paper allows printing of high resolution images but has a finish that you can write on which you need for a calendar! Matt paper can be bought for as little as 4 Pence per sheet.

In my written guide I have supplied detailed instructions on how to use my templates with Photoshop and even the free image editing software Gimp.
If you think its too early yet to think about Christmas then don't worry I will re-post this on my blog again each month up to Christmas. If you do find my tutorial of use then please leave a comment on either the video or my blog post saying what you created.

Thanks
Andy

Where to Pick Your Own Strawberries near Derby. A Time-Lapse drive to Scaddows Farm, Ticknall.

One of the best things about Briitish summers is being able to pick your own Strawberries. Here in Derby you don't have to drive too far out of the city to get to a farm where you can pick your own fruit.
Just in case you did not know about this farm I have created a time-lapse driving video below of a drive from Osmaston Road in Derby to the PYO farm.

Do you like the taste of freshly picked English Strawberries with cream?
There is nothing quite like the taste and its cheaper than buying them from the supermarket.

Here in my video I have recorded a time-lapse car journey from Derby to Scaddows Farm near Ticknall in Derbyshire.
As you will see its not too far from Derby City to this "pick your own" fruit farm and well worth the drive.
As well as Strawberries they also have blackcurrents, Raspberries, Redcurrents and Gooseberries, also locally produced fruit and veg etc available in their farm shop.

The PYO Season is June to late July and its open 7 days a week from 9.30am to 7.30pm. Because you can collect so much fruit its great for those people wanting to make Jams or cakes but I just like to eat them with cream.

Driving Details:
The car journey starts on Osmaston Road (A514) in Derby and ends at Scaddows Farm, Ticknall, Derbyshire.
The ENTIRE journey from start to end is on the A514 road so very easy to drive.
It starts in The Osmaston area of Derby then through Allenton, Shelton Lock, Chellaston, Swarkestone, Stanton by Bridge and Ticknall.
This trip is 9.3 Miles and takes about 17 minutes if there is no traffic.

When you arrive at the farm entrance you need to turn left and follow the track along and down to the parking area.
Here you can get your plastic punnet or basket with a handle (you pay for the basket when you weigh in your Strawberries). Speaking personally from experience I find that the best quality Strawberries are found furthest away from the entrance to the field as  most people are lazy and just walk to the nearest plants but of course those plants tend to have been picked the most of all.
Also you can find some good crops of berries near weeds and Thistles as people don't like picking near them.
Because you are picking the fruit yourself it means you can select the best of the crop, no point in picking fruit thats not quite ripe or fruit that has started to go mushy. Remove as much of the stalk as possible and don't leave discarded fruit in the walking areas as it ends up all over your shoes!

If you don't want to pick your own Strawberries then you can also buy punnets of Strawberries in the farm shop but seems a bit silly going all that way only to get some picked by someone else.

Costs:
As of July 3rd 2011
We picked 7lb 15oz of fruit and it cost £7.10 (including price for two baskets).

Pick Your Own Strawberries now at Scaddows Farm, Ticknall.

Update ! July 2011
Click me ----> Driving time-lapse video to PYO Farm.

Its that time of year again when you can go and pick your own fruit at several places around Derbyshire.
Because of the great weather over the last few weeks this has to be the best crop of Strawberries.
British Strawberries are the best by miles.

Here is a photograph of the fruit we picked in about 20 mins, over 3.5Kg of large sweet Strawberries. These cost £5.75 which includes 27p per cardboard basket.

This particular P.Y.O. farm is Scaddows Farm at Ticknall, have been there before and its not far to drive to from Derby, just head out of Derby via Chellaston on the A514 then over Swarkestone Bridge and right just after going through Stanton by bridge and follow that road until you see the Pick Your Own Strawberries signs on the left. (See my map below).
Its just an 8 minute drive from Chellaston (following the A514 all the way to the farm)

If you are using a SATNAV to get there then use the Postcode DE73 7JP and as you get near Scaddows farm you will see the PYO signs so you can't miss it.

Google Streetview of Scaddows Farm Entrance.

Once you drive through the gate you turn left and follow the path down to the car park. Park up and get a cardboard basket or plastic punnet from the owners and then walk through the gap to start picking the Strawberries. Once you have picked enough you just walk back to the people with the scales and they will weigh the baskets and tell you how much to pay.
They will also ask you to get on the scales so they can see if you have eaten any and not paid for them ! (Only joking).
My tip for getting the best Strawberries is to walk right down to the bottom corner as most people are lazy and just stay near the entrance.

The Pick Your Own fruit area is open 9.30am-7.30pm and has lots of FREE parking.
As well as Strawberries they also have Raspberries, Gooseberries and Blackcurrents that you can pick for yourself. Fruiting Season is June to late July, depending on the British weather.

As well as the Pick Your Own area there is a Farm Shop which offers fruit and veg from South Derbyshire Growers, meat from an award winning butcher, Cheese from Leicestershire and locally made jams, chutneys, cakes and other goodies.

Farm Shop Opening times
Monday - Friday 8.30am-5.30pm (café closes 4.30pm)

Saturday 8.30am - 4.30pm (café closes 4pm)
Sunday 10am - 4pm (café closes 3.30pm)

An important choice to make: your browser, New update from Microsoft KB976002 is not very user friendly

Today a new Windows Update has been installed (KB976002)  which after booting up your PC will show a screen with the title..

"An important choice to make: your browser".
The window has a title of "Information Regarding Web Browsers".

It has an OK button to click on, if you click that then it shows the screen I have pasted in here, it also shows this if you click on the close button.
It shows a random selection of 9 choices of browsers.
Below each one are two buttons labelled "Install" and "Tell me more".
Apparently this update is something to do with Microsoft having to make people aware that they do have a choice as regards which web browser they wish to use, so the “Web browser choice screen” has been added to Internet Explorer users in Europe, its required by the European Commission.
This windows update is being rolled out in March 2010. So if you have not seen this yet then you will very soon (unless you have turned off Windows updates).

I think this browser choice screen is very badly thought out because there is NO option to click "I am happy to stay with my current browser choice, Ignore and don't remind of this again".
On my PC I have the latest versions IE8, Firefox, Opera and Chrome already installed yet as you can see the screen that shows does not say "Already installed" below those browsers.
Surely this is a fundamental error in the layout of this screen as its not very obvious what you need to do to ignore this Browser Choice screen.

If you click on the "Select Later" button then this just hides the Browser Choice window until you reboot next time.

On my Windows 7 machine, when you reboot after this update has installed you will notice that the shortcut to IE on your Quick launch taskbar has gone! I bet lots of people are going to google "My Internet Explorer icon has vanished on Windows 7" after this windows update has gone on.
You will notice as well as the IE8 icon vanishing from your quick launch bar that you now have a new icon on the desktop called "Browser Choice", if you run that then you will get the browser choice window.
I guess the idea of this is to force you to choose IE over other available browsers.

On my XP SP3 machines , when you reboot after this update has been installed it actually runs the Browser choice window without any interaction.

So what do you need to do?
Windows XP:
Well if you are happy with what you already use and want to keep things as they were simply click OK on the first screen then close the second screen. Now delete the Browser Choice icon from your desktop.
Reboot and thats it back to normal. It won't bother asking you ever again.

Windows 7:
Well if you are happy with what you already use and want to keep things as they were simply click OK on the first screen.
If you want to keep Internet Explorer goto the task bar and right click on Internet explorer and select "Pin to Task bar" then close the second screen. Now delete the Browser Choice icon from your desktop.
Reboot and thats it back to normal.
I do not have Vista any more so not sure how that behaves, perhaps someone can post a comment to say if its the same as Windows 7.

Hope this helps those people out there who are not sure.

The screen that shows when you click the OK button on the first screen takes you to this page :
http://www.browserchoice.eu/BrowserChoice/browserchoice_en.htm

For information about this Windows update :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=976002

There is also a shorcut icon on the desktop which runs :
C:\WINDOWS\system32\browserchoice.exe

If you goto Start - Run and type msconfig and then click on the startup tab you can see its set to run browserchoice every time your computer starts up.

One thing I also don't understand is the selection of browsers its has to offer, Everyone I'm sure will know all of the popular ones such as Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome but also listed are several browsers that I have never heard of, also some that have not been updated for ages such as Maxthon which seems to have been abandoned back in 2008.
As a web designer I have kept en eye on what browsers are popular as things change over the years. There is an upto date table month by month which shows which browsers are popular. See this here :
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
As you can see people KNOW they have a choice of web browser with Firefox being a clear winner these days.
People that only use Internet Explorer are most likely people that don't even know that there are different browsers available, so to suddenly offer a bewilldering range of browsers to these people is going to cause trouble.

I dare say in the days to follow this update will cause lots of chaos with PC users not knowing what to do.
