This blog post is about a useful software tool that I use from time to time which may be of use to panoramic photographers.
The purpose of the Pano2Movie software is simple, it will create a video file based on the recording of movement of a QTVR panorama.
So why would you want that?, well this is very useful if you want to create a DVD showcasing your VR Photography, you can record some nice pans using your portfolio of work and then create a regular DVD from the video files. The app has other uses too such as..
I will be using this software quite a bit in my next youtube video about Dovedale. I visited Dovedale to take lots and lots of 360x180 degree VR photographs but also took a few short HD video clips, but looking through the videos now I wish I had taken more video sequences, but not to worry as I have lots of VR photographs which can be made to look like live pans by using this software.
The software is fully working for 30 days so you can try before you buy.
Get Pano2Movie from here (PC and MAC versions available):
http://www.pano2movie.com/
If you find the software useful then its worth investing in it, This costs around £39 (price depending on exchange rate at the time of purchase).
How to use the software
I will assume that you already have a QTVR panorama (.MOV file).
Personally I use PTGui to stitch my shots together then use Pano2VR to create my QTVRs using the Add "Quicktime" button in Pano2VR.
Anyway first download the Pano2Movie software, this is downloaded as a zip file so you will need to extract the files (right click, extract all if using XP/Vista/Windows7)
The software does not require installing, you run it by simply double clicking on the exe file. So obviously if you intend to use the software often then its worth moving the files to a safe place on your hard disk such as C:\Program Files\Pano2Movie\ then creating a shortcut icon on your desktop to to exe file.
When you run Pano2Movie you are presented with the main panel you can see in my screenshot.
Now goto the File dropdown menu and select Load QTVR. Find your .MOV file (Quicktime Panorama) and load it in. This should then show in the preview window.
Click on the Dimensions selection and pick the size you want to record to. This will be the size that the video will be recorded in. In my example here I have selected "1280 x 720 -HD" as I want to use the video on Youtube in HD mode.
Now select the Frame Rate that you want to use, this will depend on what you are going to do with the final video, in my example I will be importing the video file in Sony Vegas 9 Pro and mixing it with HD video clips that are recorded at 29.97FPS.
The next thing you need to do is have an idea of what sort of movement you are planning on capturing to video. The viewer behaves exactly the same as viewing your panorama in Quicktime player. So you can try moving around and zooming.
Once you are ready to record get the start view how you want it and click the Record button. Note that even though you have clicked the record button its not actually recording anything at alll until you move the view. If you want the final video to have a few seconds of static view before moving the scene then you can alter this using the timeline controls at the end.
Now move, Pan and zoom the view in the way you want it, all of your movements will be recorded. As you move around you will see the Duration counter increase, this is the amount of playback seconds captured.
When you have finished with panning click on the Record button again to stop recording.
On the timeline at the bottom you will see curves for P/T/F (in other words Pan, Tilt and Field of view/Zoom). You can use the many controls on this timeline to change the recorded movement to get it just how you want it.
Remember at this stage all the software has done is capture a sequence of numbers that relate to your Pan Tilt and Field of View movements, no video has been generated yet.
To see how your video will look you can click the Preview button, this will playback your movements in the window so you can get an idea of how its going to look.
If you are happy with your recording click on the Export button, the software will start the conversion process by creating a sequence of frames (.jpg or .png images.)
There is a progress bar showing the conversion progress, be aware that this can take some time if you have selected large dimensions and its a long recording.
Selecting "high quality (but slow)" in the export preferences panel increases the conversion time three fold.
Once its generated the image sequence (when the progress bar is at 50%) it then creates the video file by sequencing these frames, this part of the conversion process is faster than the first stage of conversion.
Once its completed this, it will purge the image sequence from the folder and create a video file. The default video file format will be a .MOV file but you can specify all manner of video formats including H624, just create a profile using the settings in the export panel.
Now you have your video file you can play it using Windows Media Player or Quicktime Player if you have generated a .MOV file.
When you play it back, it should replicate the exact movements that you recorded in Pano2Movie.
You can now import this video file into your video editing software for whatever purpose you need it for, for example using Roxio 2010 Pro DVD creator to make it into a DVD.
In my case I will be importing the video clip along with many other panned Pano2Movie recordings into Sony Vegas 9 Pro so I can intersperse the recorded pans with real HD video footage to make a complete HD movie for Youtube.
Hope you found this software utility review of use.

Video of Ducks and a Pheasant at Peak Village Outlet, Rowsley Derbyshire
Here is my latest local video, a simple one of the Ducks and a Pheasant at Peak Village Outlet, Rowsley.
If you have ever parked in the car park at Peak Village Shopping Outlet in Rowsley Derbyshire then you can't have failed to miss these Ducks. They can always be seen at the end of the car park near the river.
The River Wye flows past the end of the car park and into the Mill next door.
The food you can see at 0:23 is Duck food I bought from Squeaks and Beaks at Alvaston, Derby.
Is that Pheasant at 0:57 a Common Pheasant or some other breed? Anyone out there know which it is?
Never seen a Pheasant here before. You can see the female Pheasant at 1:34 and at 1:47 in the silly bit !
This footage was taken on Friday 23rd April 2010 at 4:18pm.
Hope you enjoyed this little video of the famous Rowsley Ducks.

Mackworth library now open after 50 year wait.
The new Mackworth Library, funded by the Big Lottery, opened on Thursday 25th March 2010 at 3pm. It was opened by Paul Pegg, chairman of Mackworth Estate Community Association.
At the opening there was a song from Reigate School Choir, and a free commemorative mug for the first six people to join the library.
When Mackworth Estate was planned out in the 1950s, it showed a library on Knightsbridge Recreation Ground but its only now that such a library has been built.
Here is a photograph I took of the newly opened library.
The library is located at the end of the shopping arcade on Prince Charles Avenue on the corner with Mornington Crescent. (see my map lower down this post).
Mackworth library is the second of three new libraries to be opened as part of a £2.7m project in the city. Last year Allenton Library opened and later this year a new one is scheduled to open in Chellaston which open its doors on June 10.
Having visited Mackworth Library on Saturday Morning I think this is going to be very popular with the local residents. The building is a modern looking structure and is very light inside.
On Saturday there were two people from Derby Museum showing some exhibits to people, It was great to be able to have someone talk to you in great details about the exhibits and even handle them. Exhibits such as Hornbooks, Lotus Shoes, Silk Worms, Arrowheads, Victorian Glass Bean purse.

World Wide Panorama - Derby Cathedral Quarter Wheel
Happy New Year and welcome to 2010.
My first blog entry of the year is about my latest entry on the World Wide Panorama website which has just gone live today. My entry for this event is of the Derby Cathedral Quarter Wheel in Derby Market Place.
I have contributed 18 360 degree panoramic photographs over the years.
Here is my best of 2009 entry:
Derby Cathedral Quarter Wheel.
It is best viewed in Fullscreen Mode.
In case you have never heard of The World Wide Panorama:
The World Wide Panorama began in March 2004 and has become an ongoing series of events. Photography takes place on the solstices (longest and shortest days of the year) and equinoxes (day and night of equal length). There is also a "best of" each year.
A VR panorama (VR for virtual reality) is a specially created computer image that goes all the way around the viewer. It is a revolutionary way to document a particular place and time – the next best thing to being there.
VR panoramas are interactive - Use the mouse to rotate the panorama, use Shift and Control to zoom in and out.
To look at other peoples entries for the best of 2009 you can use this map:
WWP Best of 2009 Map.
If you use Google Earth then you can even download a .kml file which has place markers for every panoramic photograph that has been entered since 2004 :
KML File for Google Earth.
Hope you like this.

The Derby Market Place Big Wheel, Cathedral Quarter Wheel is ready for passengers
The Big wheel is back in 2011. <-- Click for details

This is a panoramic photograph I took on Sunday morning of the Cathedral Quarter Wheel which officially opened to the public on Saturday 12th September 2009.
It took 6 days to build, and is 60m (197 ft) tall in the Market Place, has 40 observation pods and weighs 365 tonnes!
The Big Wheel will be on Derby's Market Place until Saturday 31st October, so thats seven weeks so theres no excuse not to have a ride on it.
The ride lasts for 15 minutes so there is plenty of time to take in the great views it has to offer.
Commentary inside the pods has been created by Heart 106 FM, with facts about the Cathedral Quarter area, the history of Derby and key points of interest that you can see from the wheel.
If you listen to Sam and Amy on Heart 106 Breakfast show on Wednesdays then you may win a private gondolier for the family that evening !
The Cathedral Quarter Wheel is open from
10am to 10pm Monday to Thursday
10am to 11pm on Friday and Saturday
10am to 8pm on Sundays.
It costs
£5 for adults
£4 for seniors and disabled passengers
£3 for children under 1.4 metres, and free for children under three.
There is also a VIP Gondola which takes up to 4 people for £50.00
It has 1 disabled access gondola.
There is a 20% discount for Cathedral Quarter loyalty card holders. For more information, visit www.derbycathedralquarter.co.uk
If you have ever been on the Manchester wheel then you will aleady know what a great view you can get from these things, that wheel is exactly the same height as the Derby wheel. But unless you have been on a Derby Cathedral Tower Open day then you won't have been lucky enough to have seen the views over the city of Derby from such a high vantage point, so I think this is a great thing for the City of Derby.

Darley Park Concert, Britains biggest FREE classical concert.

This Sunday, 6th September 2009 sees the annual Darley Park Concert, Britains biggest FREE classical concert.
The concert takes place in the natural amphitheatre of Darley Park which is located in Darley Abbey, Derby, Derbyshire, U.K.
My interactive map for this event.
Starting at 5.30pm, With an amazing firework finale, attracting crowds of around 30,000.
2009 is the international year of Astronomy, marking several momentous events – the 40th anniversary of the first manned landing on the Moon and the 400th anniversary of the use of the telescope by Galileo Galilei to observe the moon and planet Jupiter.
Sinfonia VIVA and regular Darley Park concert conductor, James Holmes will be performing a spectacular programme of music with links to all things astronomical.
Admission is FREE, car parking is £5.
Personally I’ve found its best to walk in or get someone to give a you a lift as this event attracts so many people that you may have trouble parking nearby.
Its also worth taking a torch with you as its not very well lit on the entrances into Darley Park and due to the large amount of people you may tread on someones toes !
Programme of music:
Strauss/Townend – 2001 : A space Odyssey
Mozart – Overture: Magic Flute, Der Holle Rach
Hayman – When you wish upon a star
Sousa – Sousa stars and stripes forever
Williams – ET Adventure on Earth
Wagner – Ride of the Valkyries
Strauss – Music of the spheres, Tritsch Tratsch Polka
Dvorak – Song to the Moon
Mancini/Mercer – Moon river
Mercury/Townend – Bohemian Rhapsody
Williams – Star Wars: Imperial March, Throne Room, Closing sequence
The photograph here is one I took during the amazing firework finale at the 2004 concert.

This is held at Willington Sports and Social Club, There is a small amount of parking available at the back of the club and a large field opposite the car boot sale. Also a lot of buyers seem to park on Twyford Road (A5132) but you need to be careful parking on this road as its a rather fast road.
In good weather there are so many booters that they are on every bit of space around including the road side.
At one point this car boot sale was taking place on some land off Frizams Lane but they have not used that for a long time. This is one of those car boots that is not too large that you don't know where to start but not too small that there is hardly anything to buy. Or at least that's what I've found, being outdoors the weather is going to make a difference to how many booters are there.
Willington Car Boot used to have a website with lots of details about this car boot which was on www.krazybooters.com but that seems to be dead now.
The Saturday boot sale runs from March to the end of October.
Sellers are allowed to setup from 7am and buyers are allowed in at 8am
Entry price (on foot) is 50p for Adults, Kids are free.
A sellers Pitch is £7 for Cars and £10 for Vans and Trailers.
Willington Monday Car Boot Sale
The Monday car boot sale runs from June to September.
Monday sellers are allowed to setup from 9am and buyers are allowed in at 9:30am
As with most smaller car boots this starts to thin out at dinner time so get there early.

South Derbyshire Heritage News 2003

My website has been featured in many magazines and articles over the years but I have never got around to mentioning them as there does not seem a suitable place to put them on my website.
Now I have a blog this seems like the ideal place for such things.
Click on the scan to the left from South Derbyshire Heritage News back in April 2003 about my website, Quite funny looking at the images I happened to use in the article, Derby Hippodrome Theatre at the time was in good condition, liitle did it know how it would end up just 5 years later !
South Derbyshire Heritage News is available to view online which includes some back issues too.
Heritage News is published three times a year around April, August and December.
It is circulated to all parish councils / meetings, amenity societies and historical groups within South Derbyshire, and is also distributed to libraries and to local press contacts.
If you enjoy reading about local history then take a look here at the Heritage News editions online.

Willow Tree Tea Rooms, Mercia Marina, Willington

This is Willow Tree Tea Rooms at Mercia Marina in Willington, Derbyshire. Mercia Marina opened in September 2008, driven past it many times but not stopped before.
The tea rooms offer good quality food and nice service, you can sit on the veranda and watch the many boats going in and out of the Marina.
For a pot of tea for two and two very large tea cakes it was £4.20, Very quick service.

Derby Hippodrome Theatre, 17 months later

I took these two photographs this morning, It shows the extensive damage that was done during "roof repairs" way back in March 2008.
My god what a mess this building is in!
If you want to see the Derby Hippodrome roof being "repaired" then watch this video.

Melbourne, Derbyshire by car video now live.
Here is the driving route map
Peniston Lamb was a resident of Melbourne Hall in the 18th Century and in 1770 he was created into a peer, he took the title of of Lord of Melbourne. His son, the second Lord Melbourne, became Queen Victoria's first Prime Minister, and the Austrailian city of Melbourne was named after him! How many people know that!
Another of Melbourne's claim to fame is Thomas Cook, born in Melbourne in 1808, famous for bringing cheap holiday travel to everyone.
Thomas Cook was born in a cottage (now demolished) in Quick Close, at the top of High Street.
Thomas Cook died in 1892, having established his company as the pioneer of popular travel.
Another resident was Rowland Mason Ordish (1824-1886), he was an engineer noted for his work on the single-span roof of London's St Pancras railway station and also our very own Derby Market Hall in 1866.
